A laser is a device that emits light through a process of “Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation”. We recognize the immense healing technology available through Medical Lasers in the health sector. The photo to the right is a laser diode powered by 3 volts and is less than 1 inch in length. Lasers have both medical & commercial purposes. There are FIVE main classes of lasers:
Class . . . . . . . Strength . . . . . .Example/Focus . . . . . . . . . .Year Began
Class I/II . . . . < 1 mW . . . . . . Laser printers/pointers . . . . . . 1980s
Class IIIA . . . 1 – 5 mW . . . . . Telescopes . . . . . 1990s
Class IIIB . . . . 5 – 500 mW . . .Medical Grade . . . 1970s
Class IVa . . . . 10 – 10,000W. . Industrial – Safety Issues 1950s
Class IVb . . . . .0.5 – 10 W . . . Extended Medical 2000s
Class IIIB laser equipment is used for Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) and is the group of Clinical Lasers used at Advanced Medical Health Clinic. See the SERVICES section for details.
Clinical trials at Advanced Medical Health Clinic with a test patient base of 92 pateints determined that the upward limit to 100% effective in healing humans is to use no more than 4W of energy. More than that causes too little time to incite the cells to heal effectively. Some Class 4 laser companies push the higher wattage, say 10W to hasten the treatment. Thus the practitioner saves treatment time by going to the higher wattage above 4W, but only delivers about 70% effectiveness to healing patients based on the study mentioned above. Also, the protocol of moving the Class 4 laser wand like a paint brush is actually spending less time on the damaged area. Instead, turn down the watts and let the laser rest on the skin for at least 20 seconds. This is the minimum reaction time required to heal, again based on the above study.
There are some very effective, yet unique uses of lasers:
1. PUVA uses UVA & UVB wavelengths cures Eczemia, Psorassi & Vitiligo to a 92% level on an early detect basis.
2. PhotoDynamicTherapy (PDT) used in the treatment of some cancers.
3. PhotoBioModulation . . also called Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) (or Cold Laser Therapy)
There are three wavelengths that are most effective:
a) Red light, 635nm wavelength, delivers a 5 to 8 times increase in healing. Penetrates about 3/8″ into the skin.
b) Near Infrared, 808nm wavelength, 2-3″ deep penetration, similar to red light but penetrates to deeper relieve neuromuscular and joint problems.
CLASS IV is the most powerful of the classes. It starts at a power of 1/2 Watt and goes up to 10,000 Watts of power. It is used for surgical, laboratory & military purposes. Typically, the class IV is a cutting &/or burning Laser. In the below 10W power range, there are some significant medical applications of the Class IIIb and Class IV Laser, such as: using as it a Light cure in Dentistry, LASIK or LASEK for the Eyes, Laser Assisted Surgery, BacteriaArrest Laser, etc.
Contraindications: these laser units should not be used for use over the pregnant uterus, should not be used for use with carcinoma or any known primary or secondary lesions, should not be used over the thyroid gland, should not be used for hemorrhage, should not be used when taking immune suppressant drugs and should not be used in the cardiac region in patients with heart disease.
